How to Rewire a Vintage Chandelier Safely at Home

You found a beautiful old chandelier at a flea market or in a relative's loft, and the cord is cracked, the sockets are loose and the brass is stained around the arms.

You found a beautiful old chandelier at a flea market or in a relative's loft, and the cord is cracked, the sockets are loose and the brass is stained around the arms. Before it goes anywhere near your ceiling, you need to rewire a vintage chandelier properly, because old wiring is the single most common cause of fixture fires I see as an electrician.

The good news is that this is a job most careful people can do at a kitchen table in an afternoon. You do not need special tools, just patience and a methodical approach. Below I walk through what to buy, how to take it apart, how to run new wire through the arms, and when to hand the job to a professional.

Why old chandelier wiring fails

Chandeliers built before the 1970s were usually wired with rubber insulated wire or cloth covered cord. Rubber goes brittle after 40 or 50 years, especially inside arms that heat up every evening from the bulbs. When you flex it, the insulation cracks and exposes bare copper.

The dangerous part is that you cannot see most of it. The cord hanging from the canopy may look fine while the wire inside the hottest part of each arm, right below the socket, has crumbled. If you only replace what you can see, you have changed the safe part and left the risky part behind.

Other warning signs include sockets that wobble, scorch marks around the socket base, a burning smell when the light is on, and bulbs that flicker even on a standard switch. If you have flicker only on a dimmer, that is often a different issue, covered in our guide on why a chandelier flickers on a dimmer.

What you need before you start

  • New wire: For the arms, use heat rated fixture wire. In North America this is typically 18 AWG wire rated to 105 degrees Celsius. In the UK and Europe, use 0.75 square millimetre heat resistant flex. Buy about 50 percent more than you think you need.
  • New sockets: Most vintage chandeliers use small candelabra sockets, E12 in the US or E14 in Europe. Replace them all, even if some look fine. A set of eight costs around 15 to 25 dollars or pounds.
  • Wire connectors and an earth wire: Many old fixtures were never earthed. Adding an earth or ground wire to the frame is one of the best safety upgrades you can make.
  • Tools: A small screwdriver set, wire strippers, needle nose pliers, masking tape, a marker and a basic multimeter for checking continuity.

Take photographs of the fixture from several angles before you touch it. You will be glad of them when it is time to put the arms back in the right order.

How to rewire a vintage chandelier step by step

  1. Take it down safely. If the chandelier is already installed, switch off the circuit at the consumer unit or breaker panel, not just the wall switch, and confirm it is dead with a voltage tester.
  2. Label everything. Wrap a piece of masking tape around each arm and number it. Mark the matching position on the central body.
  3. Remove the sockets. Unscrew each socket shell, loosen the terminal screws and set the old sockets aside.
  4. Pull the old wire through. Before you pull out each old wire, tape a new wire firmly to its end. As you pull the old wire out from the centre, the new one follows it through the arm. This trick saves a lot of frustration in curved arms.
  5. Connect the new sockets. Strip about 10 millimetres of insulation. Attach the ribbed or marked conductor to the silver screw, which is neutral, and the smooth conductor to the brass screw, which is live. Tighten firmly and reassemble the shell.
  6. Join the arm wires in the body. Twist all neutrals together with the neutral of the main cord and cap them with a connector. Do the same for the live wires. Fold everything neatly inside the body so nothing is pinched when it closes.
  7. Add the earth. Attach a green or green and yellow earth wire to a screw on the metal frame, and run it up the chain alongside the main cord.
  8. Test before hanging. Use the multimeter on continuity mode to check there is no connection between live and neutral, or between either conductor and the frame. Then test it with bulbs fitted on a plug in test lead if you have one.

When the arms are blocked

Sometimes old wire breaks inside an arm, or decades of corrosion block the channel. Feed a length of stiff steel guitar string or a thin fish tape through first, then pull the wire back with it. If the arm is soldered shut and fully blocked, that is a job for a lighting restorer.

The advice I disagree with

You will often read that you can save money by reusing the original sockets and just changing the cord. I push back on that every time. Old porcelain and brass sockets have worn springs that make poor contact, and poor contact causes heat. Sockets are cheap, and replacing them is the part of the job that protects you most.

The second piece of advice I disagree with is that you must always keep the original cloth cord "for authenticity." Modern cloth covered cord is widely available in vintage colours and is rated for modern use. It looks identical from below and does not carry 60 year old insulation into your ceiling.

Finally, choose bulbs carefully once it is back together. LED candle bulbs run much cooler than old incandescent ones and put far less stress on your new wiring. Our guide on which chandelier bulbs give the best warm glow lists the colour temperatures that suit older fixtures.

When to call an electrician instead

Rewiring the fixture itself is often DIY friendly, but connecting it to the ceiling is a different matter. In the UK, adding a new light circuit or altering fixed wiring may need to be notified under building regulations, and in many US states local codes require a licensed electrician for anything beyond a like for like fixture swap. Call a professional if:

  • The ceiling box has no earth wire or is not rated for the weight
  • The fixture weighs more than about 10 kilograms
  • You find aluminium wiring, scorched cables or no clear neutral in the ceiling
  • Your multimeter test shows anything unexpected

If you are hanging a heavy restored piece, a properly fixed ceiling plate matters as much as the wiring. Pairing the job with an installed ceiling medallion around the chandelier also hides any damaged plaster around the old fitting.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to rewire a vintage chandelier?

Doing it yourself usually costs between 30 and 70 dollars or pounds for wire, sockets and connectors. A lighting restorer or electrician will typically charge 100 to 300 depending on the number of arms and how complex the fixture is. Very ornate crystal pieces can cost more.

What wire should I use to rewire a chandelier?

Use heat rated fixture wire for the arms, around 18 AWG rated to 105 degrees Celsius in North America or 0.75 square millimetre heat resistant flex in Europe. For the main cord down the chain, use a matching lamp or cloth covered cord. Always include an earth wire if the fixture has a metal frame.

Is it safe to use an old chandelier without rewiring it?

Not if it was made more than 30 or 40 years ago or you do not know its history. Old rubber or cloth insulation crumbles inside the arms where you cannot see it. Rewiring is cheap compared with the risk of a short circuit or fire.
