How to Size a Linear Chandelier for a Long Dining Table

You have a 240 cm dining table and a single round chandelier that lights the middle beautifully while the two people at each end eat in a dim half light. That is the exact problem a linear chandelier solves, but only if you get the length, height and brightness right. Buy one that is too long and you will clip it with your head when you pull out a chair. Too short and it looks like a bar light floating over a runway.
I fit and source lighting for dining rooms every month, and these are the measurements I actually use on site, not the vague "proportional to the room" advice printed on boxes.
How Long Should a Linear Chandelier Be?
The rule I trust is simple: the fixture should be about two thirds of the table length. That leaves roughly a sixth of the table clear at each end, so the light covers the dishes without hanging over the heads of the people at the ends.
| Table length | Linear chandelier length | Seats |
|---|---|---|
| 180 cm | 110 to 120 cm | 6 |
| 210 cm | 130 to 140 cm | 8 |
| 240 cm | 150 to 160 cm | 8 to 10 |
| 300 cm | 190 to 200 cm, or two shorter fixtures | 10 to 12 |
Width matters too. Keep the fixture at least 30 cm narrower than the table on each side. On a typical 95 cm wide table that means the canopy of crystals or shades should not exceed about 35 to 45 cm across. Otherwise the outer edge will sit over chair backs and people will feel it looming as they sit down.
If your dining space shares a room with a sofa or a kitchen, our general guide on choosing a chandelier size that fits the room covers how to balance it against other fixtures.
Hanging Height Over a Long Dining Table
For an 8 foot (roughly 244 cm) ceiling, hang the bottom of the linear chandelier 75 to 85 cm above the tabletop. Add about 7 to 8 cm for each extra 30 cm of ceiling height. A 300 cm ceiling usually lands the bottom edge around 90 to 95 cm above the table.
Linear fixtures are less forgiving than round ones here. A round chandelier only blocks sightlines in the middle. A long bar or crystal rail can block the view between everyone at the table if it hangs too low. Sit down, have someone hold the fixture in place, and check that you can see the face of the person opposite without leaning. A full breakdown for standard tables is in how high to hang a chandelier over a dining table.
Lumens, Bulbs and Glare for a Linear Chandelier
A dining table needs about 300 to 400 lux on the surface for comfortable eating and reading menus or recipe cards. In practice that means:
- A 150 cm linear fixture with five integrated LED points of 600 lumens each (3000 lumens total) works well in most rooms.
- Choose a colour temperature of 2700K. Food looks warm and appetising, and skin tones look natural.
- Pick a CRI of 90 or above. Low CRI makes tomatoes look brown and red wine look muddy.
- Insist on a dimmer. Weekday dinners need full brightness for homework and family meals. Candle level evenings need 20 to 30 percent.
Exposed bulbs are where linear designs go wrong most often. Five bare filament bulbs in a row sit right in the eye line of people at the table, so everyone squints. Choose shades, frosted glass or downward facing diffusers if the fixture will hang under 90 cm above the table. I have the same complaint about bedroom fittings, covered in choosing a bedroom chandelier that does not glare.
The Advice I Disagree With: One Long Fixture Is Not Always Better
Showroom staff often push a single, dramatic linear fixture for very long tables. It photographs well. But for tables longer than about 270 cm, I usually recommend two smaller pendants or two short linear pieces instead.
Here is why. A 200 cm fixture weighs a lot. Crystal linear chandeliers of that length often sit between 18 and 30 kg, and that load is usually carried by a ceiling plate that was designed for one central point. You will likely need a reinforcing batten across the joists, which means lifting a floorboard or cutting the ceiling. Two lighter fixtures can often hang from separate, standard rated boxes.
Two fixtures also give you more freedom. You can shift the table 20 cm toward the window next summer without the light looking off centre. And if one end of the table becomes a desk during the day, you can switch on just that half.
Installation Points Most People Miss
- Find the joists first. Linear fixtures need to run parallel to the table, which may not align with the existing ceiling box. A canopy with an offset mount or a swag hook can help, but plan before buying.
- Check the suspension type. Rods are rigid and stay level. Cables are adjustable but need to be trimmed exactly equal, or the bar will tilt. A 1 cm difference over 150 cm is visible.
- Measure the table centre, not the room centre. Dining tables are rarely in the middle of the room. Mark the table centre on the ceiling with a laser or a plumb line.
- Use a licensed electrician for any new box or reinforced fixing. A heavy fixture falling onto a glass table is not a risk worth saving 120 pounds on.
FAQ
Should a linear chandelier be the same length as the table?
No. Aim for about two thirds of the table length. A fixture as long as the table hangs over the end chairs, looks heavy and creates glare for the people sitting there.
How high should a linear chandelier hang above a dining table?
With a standard 240 cm ceiling, 75 to 85 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the fixture is right. Raise it about 7 cm for every extra 30 cm of ceiling height.
Can I use a linear chandelier over a round table?
It rarely looks right. A round or oval table suits a round or drum shaped fixture. Linear chandeliers work best over rectangular or long oval tables.
How many lumens does a dining table chandelier need?
Roughly 2500 to 4000 lumens for a table seating six to ten people, with a dimmer to bring it down for evenings. Warm 2700K bulbs with CRI 90 or higher make food look its best.
