How to Clean a Brass Chandelier Without Stripping It

Your brass chandelier has gone dull, patchy or almost brown, and you are not sure whether a polish will bring it back or strip it for good.

Your brass chandelier has gone dull, patchy or almost brown, and you are not sure whether a polish will bring it back or strip it for good. The wrong cleaner can remove a factory lacquer in minutes, leaving streaks that are far harder to fix than the original tarnish.

The good news is that you can clean a brass chandelier at home in about an hour, without taking it down, once you know which kind of brass you have. This guide covers the two-minute test that tells you, the gentle method for lacquered fittings, the polishing method for raw brass, and the mistakes that cause most of the damage I see.

First, find out if your brass is lacquered

Most brass chandeliers sold in the last 40 years have a clear lacquer coat over the metal. It keeps the brass shiny and stops tarnish, until it wears or cracks. Antique pieces and many handmade fittings are raw brass, which is meant to be polished.

The test is simple:

  1. Pick a hidden spot, such as the underside of an arm or the back of the canopy.
  2. Rub it gently with a soft cloth dipped in a little brass polish.
  3. If the cloth turns black, the brass is raw. If the cloth stays clean and the shine does not change, it is lacquered.

You can also check visually. Lacquered brass often has an even, glassy shine with patchy brown spots where the lacquer has failed. Raw brass tarnishes more evenly, going from gold to a soft amber and then a darker brown.

A quick magnet check is worth doing too. If a magnet sticks firmly, the piece is brass-plated steel, not solid brass. Plated pieces need the gentle lacquered method, because heavy polishing will wear through the thin brass layer.

Before you clean: safety and setup

  • Turn off the power at the breaker, not just the wall switch. You will be wiping close to sockets and wires.
  • Let the bulbs cool for at least 15 minutes, then remove them and any glass shades.
  • Use a stable stepladder with a top platform. Ideally have someone hold it.
  • Lay a dust sheet or old towel underneath to catch drips and polish residue.
  • Gather two or three soft microfibre cloths, a soft old toothbrush, cotton gloves and a small bowl of warm water.

How to clean a brass chandelier with a lacquer finish

Lacquered brass needs no polish at all. Polish is abrasive and will eat through the coat. The aim here is simply to remove dust and grease.

  1. Dust every arm and joint with a dry microfibre cloth. Work from the top down.
  2. Mix a few drops of mild washing-up liquid into 500 ml of warm water.
  3. Dampen, do not soak, a second cloth and wipe each section. Use the toothbrush for scrolls and joints.
  4. Wipe again with a cloth dampened in plain water to remove any soap film.
  5. Dry immediately with a clean cloth. Water spots on lacquer are easy to avoid and annoying to remove later.

If the lacquer has failed in patches, you will see dark brown blotches that this method will not shift. At that point you have two options: leave it as an aged finish, or have the old lacquer stripped and reapplied by a metal finisher. Trying to polish only the damaged spots almost always leaves visible edges.

How to polish raw brass on a chandelier

Raw brass can be polished back to a bright shine. Work in small sections so the polish does not dry on the metal.

  1. Dust and wash the chandelier first using the soapy water method above. Polishing over grime just grinds it in.
  2. Put on cotton gloves. Fingerprints on freshly polished brass tarnish within days.
  3. Apply a small amount of a dedicated brass polish to a soft cloth, about the size of a pea for each 10 cm of arm.
  4. Rub in small circles until the cloth darkens, then buff with a clean area of the cloth.
  5. Use a toothbrush with a tiny amount of polish on detailed castings, then buff with a dry brush.
  6. Finish with a final buff using a fresh microfibre cloth.

A five-arm chandelier takes most people 45 to 60 minutes the first time. After that, a light polish every six to twelve months keeps it bright.

The homemade cleaner advice I disagree with

You will often see ketchup, lemon and salt, or vinegar and flour pastes recommended as cheap brass cleaners. They do work on raw brass, because the acid dissolves tarnish. I still do not recommend them on a chandelier.

The problem is the fitting, not the brass. Chandeliers have wiring running through hollow arms, threaded joints and small gaps where paste can get trapped. Acidic residue left inside a joint keeps reacting with the metal and can cause green corrosion that shows up months later. On a candlestick you can rinse under a tap. On a chandelier wired to the ceiling, you cannot. A commercial polish leaves a dry residue you can buff away completely, which is why it is the better choice here.

And on lacquered brass, any acid will etch the coating and leave cloudy marks. That is the most common damage I am asked to fix.

Keeping brass bright for longer

  • Dust monthly with a dry microfibre cloth or a feather duster. Dust holds moisture against the metal.
  • Avoid steamy rooms if you can. A raw brass chandelier in a kitchen near the hob will tarnish twice as fast as one in a dining room.
  • Consider a wax coat on raw brass. A thin layer of microcrystalline wax after polishing slows tarnish for several months without the permanence of lacquer.
  • Check the bulbs. Hot halogen bulbs speed up tarnish on nearby arms. Warm white LEDs run cooler. Our guide to chandelier bulbs that give the best warm glow covers which ones still flatter brass.

If your chandelier also has crystal drops, clean the brass first and the crystal second, so polish residue does not end up on freshly cleaned glass. The method in cleaning a crystal chandelier without taking it down works well alongside this one. And if you are still deciding on a brass piece, our chandelier styles guide explains which styles traditionally use raw or lacquered brass.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use vinegar to clean a brass chandelier?

It is not a good idea. Vinegar will etch a lacquered finish, and on raw brass it can get trapped in joints and wire channels where you cannot rinse it out. A mild soap solution for lacquered brass, or a commercial brass polish for raw brass, is safer.

How do I know if my brass chandelier is lacquered?

Rub a hidden spot with a little brass polish on a soft cloth. If the cloth turns black, the brass is raw. If it stays clean and nothing changes, there is a lacquer coat, and you should only clean it with mild soapy water.

How often should a brass chandelier be cleaned?

Dust it once a month and give it a full wipe-down every three to six months. Raw brass usually needs polishing every six to twelve months, depending on humidity and how close it is to a kitchen or bathroom.
