A chandelier over a staircase looks wonderful in photos, but the job behind it is awkward. The ceiling is often 5 metres or more above the lowest step, you cannot stand a normal ladder on stairs, and the fixture has to clear people's heads on every tread, not just at the bottom. Get the height, support or access wrong and you end up with a light that people duck under or one that nobody can ever reach to change a bulb.

I install these regularly in two storey hallways and stairwells. This guide covers how to choose the height, how to secure the fixing, how to get safe access, and the details that save trouble years later.

How high to hang a chandelier over a staircase

On a flat floor, the usual rule is to keep the bottom of a fixture at least 2.1 metres (about 7 feet) above the floor. Over stairs, that clearance must be measured from the nearest tread directly below the lowest point of the fixture, not from the hallway floor. Stairs rise as you climb, so a chandelier that clears the bottom step can hit someone on the fifth.

Here is how to work it out:

  1. Drop a plumb line or a weighted string from the ceiling box down to the stairs.
  2. Find the highest tread that sits under any part of the fixture's width. For a 60 cm wide chandelier, check 30 cm either side of the centre.
  3. Measure up from that tread. The bottom of the chandelier should be at least 2.1 metres above it, and I prefer 2.3 metres so tall visitors do not flinch.

In a tall stairwell, you also want the light to sit roughly level with a window on the landing or centred in the open volume between the two floors. That way it reads well from both the hall and the landing, rather than hanging at the very top where nobody notices it.

If you are unsure how hall lights differ from stairwell lights, our guide on how high to hang a foyer chandelier sets out the flat floor rules this builds on.

Support and fixing

A standard plastic ceiling rose or light-duty box is designed for a pendant of a few kilograms. A stairwell chandelier with a long chain often weighs 10 to 25 kg, and the chain lets it swing slightly when doors open and close. Over the years that movement works a weak fixing loose.

Use a metal box or fixing plate rated for the weight, screwed directly into a joist or onto a timber noggin fitted between two joists. If you cannot get above the ceiling, a heavy-duty adjustable brace that expands between joists through the hole is an option. For anything over about 20 kg, use a hook or eye bolt into solid timber and let the chain carry the load, with the wiring taking no strain at all.

Not sure whether your ceiling can take it? Read our checks on how to tell if a chandelier is too heavy for your ceiling before you buy.

Getting safe access on the stairs

Do not balance an ordinary stepladder on the treads. It is the most common way people get hurt on this job. You have three proper options:

  • A combination or multi-position ladder. These have legs that adjust separately, so one side sits on a higher step. Lock every hinge and check it on each tread before climbing.
  • A stair platform or staging. A small level platform that sits across several treads. It costs around 100 to 200 pounds to hire for a weekend and is much safer for a long job.
  • A small scaffold tower. For ceilings over about 5.5 metres, hiring a stair tower is the safe choice, and many installers will not work without one.

Always have a second person with you. One holds and steadies, the other works. Lifting a 15 kg chandelier while standing on a ladder is not a one person job.

Why a lift or winch is often a waste of money

You will see motorised chandelier lifts recommended for every high ceiling, so you can lower the light for cleaning. They do work, but for most homes I do not think they are worth the cost. A good unit plus fitting can run to 600 pounds or more, it needs extra space in the loft, and it is one more motor to fail.

A better plan for most stairwells is to choose a fixture that rarely needs attention. LED bulbs rated for 15,000 to 25,000 hours mean a change every eight to ten years with normal use. A design with fewer, larger glass parts collects less dust than a mass of tiny crystals. Then hire a platform once every year or two for a clean. Over a decade, that costs far less than a lift.

The exception is a very large crystal chandelier in a dusty or high-traffic stairwell. There, a lift can pay for itself in convenience.

Wiring and switching

A stairwell light should be switchable from both the bottom and the top of the stairs. This two-way switching is normal in most homes, but check whether the existing light point is already wired for it. If the old fitting was a simple pendant on a single switch, you may need new cable runs.

Fitting a dimmer is a good idea, since a full brightness chandelier at night can be dazzling as you come down the stairs. Make sure the dimmer and the bulbs are compatible, especially with LEDs.

New circuits, moved light points and new switches usually count as notifiable or regulated work depending on where you live, and a stairwell is not a place to experiment. Our piece on why a licensed electrician still matters for a simple fixture swap explains when to call one in.

Frequently asked questions

How low should a chandelier hang over stairs?

The bottom of the chandelier should be at least 2.1 metres above the highest step that sits beneath any part of it. Many installers aim for 2.3 metres for extra comfort. Measure from the tread, not from the hallway floor.

What size chandelier should go in a stairwell?

A common guide is to add the length and width of the space in metres, then multiply by 10 to get a rough diameter in centimetres. A 3 by 2.5 metre stairwell suits a chandelier of about 55 cm across. In very tall spaces, a taller or tiered fixture fills the height better than a wider one.

How do you change a bulb in a chandelier over stairs?

Use a multi-position ladder set to the stair angle, a stair platform, or a small scaffold tower, and always have a helper. Never stand a normal stepladder on the treads. Fitting long-life LED bulbs from the start means you will rarely need to do it.
